Working From Home

In this article the writer writes about working from home.chillibreeze writerVishalakshi K M

No longer do we live in a world where we wake up to the sound of our mothers toiling away in the kitchen making our favorite food, while our fathers read the papers. Dad would leave for work and we for school after a good breakfast, with a nice lunch packed in our lunch box. Evenings started pretty early and a family eating together at the dinner table was a common sight.

In today’s world, all this seems to be lost. We are woken up by alarm clocks and the sound of horns blaring. We see both mum and dad toiling, definitely not happily in the kitchen to make breakfast and lunches. It is usually both of them who set out to work, at times much earlier than the children in order to beat the traffic, after uttering a few instructions to live-in nannies that take care of the kids. They return home late in the evening or night only so they can avoid the evening rush hour traffic. Breakfast and lunches are no more sit-down meals, but a quick sandwich, which you can eat walking to work. A family eating dinner together at the table is reserved for very special occasions. And on the rare occasion that the family does eat dinner together, it is usually in front of the television, catching up on the evening news. Weekends are usually about catching up with the week’s laundry and getting a lot of cooking for the week done. A family outing is generally a quick visit to the local grocery store. Hobbies such as reading are a luxury, with the only reading generally consisting of the day’s headlines. Such is the world that we have stepped into, where people prioritize their careers over everything, traffic and the city infrastructure seem to be the most vital issues debated on and maids or nannies seem to the be the most valuable resource.

Considering all these factors, more and more people from all walks of life are deciding to work from home. The most important reason for this is spending more time at home and with their family. They save a lot of time, which would have been spent in traffic jams and they don’t blow their tops at family members for being late to work. Though deadlines do exist, nothing is time bound to the minute and hence doing something at your own pace is satisfying. No longer do people feel like they have no friends because of the guilt of not being able to spend enough time with your family. They are able to ensure that a good healthy meal is waiting for their family at the end of the day. This way they have the best of both worlds and an advantage over the most valued resource – time. No longer do they have an excuse for not taking care of their health because they have no time to exercise. They are able to work when they want and how they want. And of course if they want to catch up with a daytime soap, they can still do it.

But does this mean that you are cutting yourself off from colleagues or business partners? With the huge advancement in real time communication technology, this is not a problem at all and it only gets better. Meeting colleagues and business partners at regular intervals and not on a daily basis definitely puts a fresh perspective on things. Big companies are now encouraging employees to work from home at least one day a week, which saves valuable time in commuting. Also with regards to natural resources, global warming and other environmental hazards, by having a home office we would be doing our little bit by saving on gas and reducing pollution. No longer are you stuck in dull box size cubicles. You can make your office bright and cheerful and even have music blaring if that suits your kind of job and your style of working won’t disturb co-workers.

However, how much of this is actually possible? You have to clearly differentiate between home and office. A strict discipline to follow work timings and stick to deadlines is something that you need to dictate to yourself as you are your own boss. A lot of dedication and time would be required to set up a home office initially, but the rewards hereafter are endless.

—About our writer:

Vishalakshi,

A software engineer by profession, a stay-at-home mom of two beautiful children, there are a few things I cannot resist – vegetarian food, math puzzles and nature. Born in Amchi Mumbai, with roots in God's own country Kerala, a Bangalorean at heart, I am so proud of being an Indian. My favorite company – good music and a great book though meeting and talking to people from all walks of life and learning about their culture and traditions is also something I thoroughly enjoy. I believe in Karma and my philosophy is "Everything happens for the best".
