So You Want to be an Editor

So you want to be an editorchillibreeze writer Rohan

It is clearly understood that in a country where spiritualism and technological concepts go hand in hand, the love for languages, reading and writing shouldn't be completely written off. With the media industry booming, this only gives more opportunities to budding editors, namely youngsters who want to make a career in the field of language translations, editing and writing to name a few.

India has now evolved to a much higher platform from just being a hub for learning to other worthwhile career and learning options in the recent past, editing being one of them. The jobs available today in the field of journalism and media are fulfilling and lucrative now than what it was even a decade ago and especially for those who have a penchant to write and learn new languages as well. This doesn’t only pertain to students studying communication or even the generic ways of journalism, but even for those who aspire to have a well satisfactory career in the field of editing as an editor. If you have the flair to write and want to be ambitious with your writing and editing, you should thus read what we have in store for you.

Content or instructional writing, be it part time, work from home or even at large establishments across the nation has seen a rise in the recent past. Most who get into the domains would be scholars from arts, science, and even commerce as well. Some writers are undergraduates and once they are done with the course, they look for full time careers as writers or editors with reputed companies, either on a freelance or a full time position.

The role and responsibilities of an editor

  1. An editor looks after the content inflow which needs to head for publication. He could be working for a daily tabloid, a monthly magazine, a weekly newsletter or even for websites, NGO’s and chronicles.
  2. As an editor s/he would have to know the mindset of the audience he intends to target. He has to spruce the content to capture the lion’s share of the markets imagination.
  3. Rare as it is, but proofreading the content has to be one of his forte, for this he needs to be well versed in the language he edits. S/he needs to check on typographical mistakes, grammar, sentence structure etc.
  4. An editor should know the right ways on making the content flow smoothly or else it beats the purpose of publishing anything which wouldn’t capture the thoughts of the reader at large.
  5. S/he should be ready to devote long hours at times and ensure precision and quality is involved in every step to make the content given, professional and excellent on delivery.

Having said this, the top ten positions for an editor in India are:

  1. Business and web content editor
  2. Helping with formatting editors resumes
  3. Medical editing
  4. Television and video editor
  5. Photo editor
  6. Proof reader
  7. Magazine editor
  8. Development editor and copy editing
  9. Ghost editing and writing
  10. Book editor

Conclusion
If you think you have the caliber and skills to get onboard as an editor for Indian media and technology, remember the competition is tough and many contenders would compete for the post. Keeping that as a cue, one should constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills, either through courses online or through full time help. We wish you all the luck on being the next famous editor around, and may your skills erase the complexities of written and visual aids in future. Good luck folks!
