How to Start a Career as
Network Engineer

How to start a career as network engineerchillibreeze writerPartha Saradhi

With the continuous advancement of technology, especially in the field of information technology, network engineers are in great demand. Many companies that focus mainly on information technology seek young, talented, and driven network engineers who wanted to establish their career in this kind of profession. However, not everyone can become a network engineer. Only those who can complete a baccalaureate degree in network engineering and be licensed in this profession will be able to start their career as a network engineer. Being a network engineer entails a lot of hard work, patience, and perseverance in order to reach this dream profession. The following steps may help you in starting and building your career as a network engineer.

Step 1: Know what a network engineer is

Before we discuss how to start a career in network engineering, we need to first understand first what a network engineer is and the responsibilities associated with this kind of profession.

In the field of information technology, the responsibilities of a network engineer include, but are not limited, to the following:
- A network engineer is an expert who deals with computer networks. It is his responsibility to design, implement, and troubleshoot these networks.
- Generally, a network engineer focuses primarily on duties which are related to high-level network issues. These include network design, network architecture, network policies, and choosing network devices. The tasks of network engineer may not include system administrations duties. Moreover, this kind of engineers may also not be involved in dealing with issues regarding direct user support.

There are many other types of professional engineers in “traditional” engineering disciplines. These may include electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, chemical engineers, electronics engineers, and many more. In this situation, the title “engineer” may be interpreted as a “technician” in the particular field that they choose to concentrate on.

Network engineers are responsible for the computer infrastructure of many companies. Usually, companies hire their own network engineers and those who cannot afford to do so, seek the help of other consulting firms if they encounter problems. As mentioned earlier, the main duty of these network engineers is to update a computer network and troubleshoot certain network problems. Thus, it is very important that a network engineer must have excellent problem-solving skills.

Step 2: Know the prerequisites of being a network engineer

The first thing that you need to obtain before you become a network engineer is a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or computer science. A baccalaureate degree in this field is important because you will need all of the knowledge and experience that you can gain from these courses. Some sources will say that to be a network engineer, getting any computer-related field is okay and that despite its name, being a network engineer does not require a degree in engineering. In any case, make sure that you complete all units required in order to get a diploma that’ll let you start your career as a network engineer.

Step 3: Get a job

While completing your degree, you may check currently available jobs related to information technology. You may go directly to the department of information technology in your university and ask if there are any advertised vacancies. Usually, the universities themselves hire network engineers so if you're lucky enough, you may get yourself a job just by simply dropping by university’s information technology office. Most college students do not do this because they want to focus on their studies. However, this is one of the best ways to build your resume.

Step 3: Learn, learn, and learn some more

In order to become a good network engineer, you need to know everything that you need to learn about this field. Maximize your learning experience. In the end, you must be able to learn the different kinds of operating systems such as Windows and Linux. Most companies use varying operating systems for their computer networks and therefore knowing these different operating systems would work to your advantage later on.

Step 4: Look for an internship

Aside from having a part time job, you may also want to look for internships within your own university. This will give you a further advantage over other network engineers because these kinds of internships will give you an experience when it comes to dealing with computer networks. Remember that there a lot of people out there who also major in computer related fields. Thus, you need to have plenty of experience in dealing and troubleshooting several types of network problems in order to be set from other ordinary, run of the mill network engineers.

Step 5: Hone your communication skills

Being a network engineer does only entail having good computer related skills. In order to have a job, you will need to market your skills as well. While your resume can do the talking for you, you still need to show that you are smart enough to answer the simple questions that the employer will give you during the interview. Some talented network engineers do not make it into their dream companies simply because they could not present themselves well in front of the employer. Your communication skills are also important when it comes to explaining the problems that the company’s computer network encountered. Aside from getting purely technology related courses, try looking for speech related classes as well and start working on your communications skills.

Conclusion

If you are really serious in becoming a network engineer, remember that you need to pay close attention to details as some certain problems with regard to computer networks cannot be easily spotted. Also, you must take time to hone not only your communication skills but more importantly, you also need to focus on working on your problem-solving skills. To start your career as a network engineer, you have to think carefully if you really like this kind of profession. Some people tend to get stuck on something that they do not really like and, in the end, regret taking their chosen professions. Being a network engineer is an exciting and interesting profession and it can be very rewarding, both financially and emotionally.
