Home is usually thought of as your sanctuary away from the world and work. However, an increasing number of people work from home. The Internet has changed the way we interact with the world. Employers and employees no longer have to share a physical space. A click of the mouse can connect them.

Who can work from home?

Working from home is usually associated with a young mother choosing to balance her professional life and raising her children by utilizing her home for both roles. However, there are plenty of men who also work from home and run a Small or Home Office (SOHO).

People who work from home can be employees like telecommuters, freelancers, business owners and several others. Jobs based on the Internet including audiotape transcription, online tutorials, data processing, freelance designing and writing software and language translation can be carried out effectively from home. There are also telesales and service jobs available in plenty. Home businesses include event management, marketing or contractor services. Contractors and freelancers usually work alone with a trusty computer in tow.

So essentially there are a whole range of jobs that can be a carried out of a SOHO. However, your current job may not be the type that can be done from home. You may need to change fields and even take additional training to start home-based work.

What are the essentials you need for working from home?

Your home office will need certain basics

1. An area for work which is physically and visually separated from your living area
2. A computer
3. A good Internet connection
4. Other communication equipment like a telephone - a dedicated line is best, fax, printer, etc
5. The right work to suit your requirements.

What you need to know before choosing to work from home?

• Be prepared to dedicate 100% of your attention to your job during working hours and ignore all distractions.
• Your children will have to be supervised or away at school during your working hours
  You will have to establish strict business hours with definite times for starting work, taking breaks and ending your workday.
• You need to set clear boundaries so your co-workers and clients know that they can contact you only during work hours regarding business.
• Working from home is lonely and isolating.
• It may pay less and be financially erratic with possibly lesser opportunities of advancement.

Tips to run a professional SOHO

Working from home is difficult because it gets lonely. You have no colleagues to share your success with, no friends to share your lunch table with and no boss, at least not with you, who will guide you through a difficult patch. Here are some tips that will help you be a professional even while you operate out of home.

• It is very important to be self motivated when you are working from home. With no one to compete against it is all easy to slide back. Set your own targets and compete against your own best performance.
• You must set aside fixed hours for work. Working from home does offer flexibility but a work schedule is essential to achieve your targets.
• It is very essential that your family and friends also understand you need to maintain professionalism at work. Learn to say a firm no when a neighbor asks you to keep an eye on her kid for an hour in the middle of your workday.
• You must also try to go out of the home office and meet your employer and clients from time to time. It will give you a greater grip on the reality of your work and will also give you the essential feedback you need.
