With the ongoing economic turmoil in the developed economies of Europe, North America and Japan, finding a fixed nine- to-five job, with benefits and perks is becoming harder. Jobs were undergoing a change similar to the assembly line of mass manufacturing, where jobs were becoming more specialized. This specialization has happened across all fields, be it education, infrastructure, and even in the field of media. This view has changed, with companies now looking to find employee's who are able to adapt to situations faster.
In the developing world, jobs are opening up in almost all service sectors, with a modest growth in the manufacturing sector. The digital revolution of the 1980s led to a growth in the service sector all over the world, allowing fresh graduate and even non-graduates to be able to find jobs which paid well. With it being unlikely for an independent revolution, like the digital or industrial revolution, to occur in the next few years or even decades, companies will be looking for individuals well trained and skilled to perform many functions well.
Environmental jobs
This sector should see a larger demand for a workforce, as mainly companies, and governments are pushing towards attaining international goals in reducing the environmental degradation occurring today. This field might just herald in a revolution of its own, if a lot of different factors do work for it. With colleges and universities, across the world offering degree programs, such as environmental science, environmental engineering, and alternative energy degrees, this field is set to absorb a considerable number of fresh graduates and people over the next decade. The environmental sector has an advantage over every other field mentioned here because jobs in this field are not limited to one genre of education, you could pursue an education in law, engineering, science, art and media, and use that knowledge and skill in this sector.
Infrastructure and housing jobs
With the growing economies of Asia, South America, and Africa, the foremost governmental aim is an improvement of infrastructure in their respective countries. Furthermore, as is always the case with growing economies, a better way of life for many people, begins with being able to purchase a home. This is spawning a demand for civil engineers, and architects, which should remain for a number of years ahead.
The housing market across the growing economies will continue to grow as long as people continue to earn more income and want a better standard to living. The availability of jobs is going to level out, if the developed economics do enter another round of recession, but hopefully the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) nations would be able to partially negate this.
Information technology jobs
We should not rule out the demand for a workforce in the IT sector. It still has the ability to spawn new ideas, and developments leading to availability of new jobs. Robotics is one subset of this sector, which would see a growth, as manufacturing companies would try to increase efficiency and productivity, to survive in these economic times.
A new child of the IT revolution, cloud computing, where the computer service you now physically enjoy, will, in the near future be online. This subset is just gaining critical mass, with the entry of Apple, Google and various giants of technology. Developments and application of cloud computing can transform the IT sector, to a very different view to that we see today. It is too early to say if cloud computing actually achieves wonder child status, but industry pundits are predicting it will.
Outsourcing is now slowly transforming itself into crowd-sourcing which seeks to distribute the problem to a community online, and they work with each other to solve the problem. This allows the problem to be solved by a group of people, each contributing the best of their knowledge. This transformation, or rather evolution of outsourcing would enable a more efficient, task solving procedure than what is presently employed.
Both cloud computing and crowd-sourcing are the growing fields under IT, and such can absorb a larger group of people in future.
End Note
Companies and economies of the world are undergoing a fundamental shift in their structure with the advent of globalization. People looking for jobs will need to be able to adapt to fast changing situations around the world, which as time progress will happen faster and more frequently. No longer can employees be satisfied with local knowledge, but need to be able to understand, comprehend and act on information and events that might take place on the other side of the world. As long as you are capable of adapting and applying a good work ethic to your job, it won’t be too difficult to find a job, no matter how much the economies of the world change.
Evolution has never killed anything but the organisms that didn't evolve.
