Microsoft - A Synonym for Success
One cannot imagine personal computers without Microsoft and the company itself is considered as a symbol of America’s unparalleled ability to pioneer new technology. The world's greatest entrepreneur, CEO and founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates had only one vision in his mind, 'computers would be a valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home'. This vision set in motion a huge effort that led to the making of this remarkable company. Let’s go back a few years into history and talk about the genesis of Microsoft. Bill Gates, born in 1955, a brilliant, young math whiz discovers computer programming. He later drops out of Harvard and starts a little computer company called Microsoft with his friends. This undeniably talented person got to do real-time programming as an eighth grader in 1968. From that moment onwards, he, along with his friend Paul Allen, lived in the world of computers. January 1975 was the dawn of the age of personal computers with the launch of the world's first mini computer 'Altair 8800'. It was a do-it-yourself contraption that you could assemble at home. No looking back from that point for Gates and Allen. A few years down the line, Microsoft started gaining incredible prominence in the area of operating systems. The success started with MS-DOS and later OS/2, which was written for IBM computers that made Microsoft most successful company in the world. In 1981, they registered the company as 'Microsoft Inc.' and went public with an IPO raising $61 million. The company later came up with office products like MS-Office, Microsoft Works, and many more which were firsts of their kind in the software market. Tthen, Microsoft went into development of advanced software applications which was received with huge appreciation from its customers all over the world. The secret behind Microsoft's success is it user-friendly applications. Windows operating system was built on the concept 'a picture is worth thousand words'. The company always targeted the layman while designing its applications. If we take a look into the history, there isn’t a single successful company on this earth which was not attacked by its rivals for violating some rules or regulations, especially, getting sued in some patent infringement case. It’s a known thing that success is always followed by lawsuits. Lawsuits always reflect the fact that market dominance can lead to suppression of competitors through unfair tactics. Even though the company is still being chased by lawsuits, the customers and stockholders of the company are fairly satisfied. Today it makes more than $60million of profit every day! That should explain everything about this software giant. To maintain its position as one of the market leaders in software industry, Microsoft has not left a single stone unturned. The way it approached the exploding netbook market is awesome. When the netbook customers universally started using the Linux operating system, Microsoft fought back by offering hardware manufacturers by offering hardware manufacturers low-priced versions of its operating system. Consumers welcomed the ability to affordably access Microsoft-compatible software. Recently, the company once more tasted success with its launch of Windows7 operating system that has sold in excess of 100 million copies in just the first six months since its general availability in the market and is critically increasing the momentum to the company’s dominance in the operating system’s market. Each and every product that was released by this company into the market has always reinforced its top position in the software world.
