India is a land of fables, so stories abound. Right from the tales that are told by a mother to a young child to get her to eat, to the funny stories of how Birbal used his wit and humor to bring home a message in the court of Akbar are much repeated and much loved. Children grow up listening to the stories from the epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabaratha from their grandparents, while learning Nursery Rhymes from the west like “I am a little tea pot short and stout” or the popular “ Humpty Dumty sat on a wall….” in their school. As a result, children are exposed to a wide variety of thoughts, ideas and characters at all time. It is highly likely that the minds of young children in India will be teaming with creative thoughts and ideas thanks to the constant external stimulations!

Reading books comes naturally to many children in the urban India as their parents themselves like to read and they ply the children with books – both in their mother tongue and in English. Buying books for children is a norm in many families in India. Even today a book store is a popular choice for a family outing.
As for the type of stories children read in India - well it depends on the age group. The market for the very young is flooded with colorful books introducing them to the colors, to the letters of the alphabet to stories etc. Thousands of titles are printed in India too, on top of which books printed in the US, UK, China and Taiwan are available in plenty. Books of British authors are better established in India than those from the US or other countries. Books by Enid Blyton are printed specially for the Indian market and continue to be very popular. Right from Noddy’s adventures, to the Famous Five series of the Secret Seven series – every book store stocks them.
If there is one favorite of children in the age group of 7 to 12 in India, it would be the Amar Chitra Katha series of comics. Almost all their publications are based on Indian Mythology, are well illustrated, printed on good paper and are interesting to read. As their name suggests – they are eternal (Amar)! Parents have no hesitation in buying these books for their children.
Thanks to the global popularity of Harry Potter books, teenagers love them in India too.
Best way to find out what children like to read would be to do a survey! If you have children in your family then mail us at epublishing@chilibreeze.com and tell us what they like to read. We will share the findings with all of you.
