Renewable Energy
In thermal power plants, the fossil fuel such as diesel or natural gas is subject to combustion by burning in a boiler which generates steam. The steam will be used in turn to run a turbine at high speed. The rotating shaft of the turbine, which is a kinetic energy, will be converted into electrical energy by an electromagnetic force.
Unfortunately any combustion of a fossil fuel emits carbon dioxide even though such combustion generates a ‘heat of combustion’, which is an exothermic reaction that can be used to generate steam to run a turbine. There are two consumables involved in thermal power generation namely a fuel (invariably a fossil fuel) and water (for steam generation and cooling). Both fossil fuel and the water used in thermal power plants require certain standards in terms of quality and quantity. The crude oil extracted from the earth cannot be used directly as a fuel in thermal power plants but it requires ‘refining’. Similarly, the water used for steam generation as well as for cooling requires certain treatment. Such quality requirements increase the cost of fuel and water considerably resulting in the high cost of energy. Moreover, resources such as fossil fuel and water are limited in supply and likely to be depleted over a period of time unlike a renewable energy source such as sun or wind. Further, thermal power plants increase the carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere over a period of time to an unsustainable level causing ‘Green house effect’ which causes global warming. In renewable energy such as solar and wind, there is no requirement of cooling water because it does not involve any combustion. In any renewable energy generation there is no chemical reaction or combustion involved but only a physical transformation of energy is involved. According to the second law of thermodynamics, the energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another form. The sun energy or wind energy that is supplied by Mother Nature free of cost is a clean source of energy that will neither deplete the fossil fuel or water nor pollute the atmosphere or the ocean. Renewable energy is the only energy that can guarantee a better world for the future generations to come. This is the least we can leave behind us for our children. It is strange some of our political leaders are skeptical about science that claims ‘human beings are causing the global warming by burning fossil fuel unabatedly’. Time will prove them wrong but it will be too late for our children!
