Review of Farhan Akhtar's Don

Review of Farhan Akhtar's Donchillibreeze writerPramila Krishnan

As the chase begins, Farhan Akhtar’s Don faces quite a bit of challenges, both on screen and off screen. Being a remake, there is constant comparison with the original. What’s more, high standards have been set by the stars who have been onscreen Don’s earlier. If Amitabh Bachchan set the screen on fire in the Hindi original, closer home, Rajnikanth with his stylish histrionic acting, ensured that “Billa” ran to packed houses in the South. Caught between the two superstars, who still enjoy a huge fan following decades later, Farhan Akhtar’s Don aka SRK has a mighty challenge. That of living up to the reputation of Don created earlier by the two superstars. And he doesn’t disappoint.

There are just a handful of heroes who can better themselves in a negative role. They not only survive with their image intact, but end up being pretty successful too. One of them is SRK. In fact, Don comes as an image booster for him post Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. As the mean, cold blooded underworld kingpin, Shahrukh proves yet again why he is the Badshah of Bollywood. Post Baazigar, it’s a pleasure to see SRK in a negative role. His cold, steely eyes send a chill right up your spine.

As for the movie, except for its slickness, it drags endlessly in the middle. As the simpleton Vijay replaces Don, one expects a spectacular plot where Vijay gets to show his skill in persuading people that he is the real Don. Unfortunately, there are no such dramatics and you feel a sense of incompleteness. Though, to give due credit to Farhan Akhtar, you do sit up in the end. However, if you forget Amitabh and the older version, you might be able to enjoy the movie.

Verdict: Watch it once for the King Khan and if you don’t like him, watch it once for the evolution in movie making.
