The Powerless Superwoman
When young, it was her father who decided the course of her life. Soon, the father got replaced by the husband. And then came the children. At every point, there was a need to prove herself; at every point, she was governed by those around her. Her life never was hers - she has never lived for herself. Her life has reached a do-it-or-die point, where underperformance is unacceptable. Every moment, she is changing roles at the speed a bird flaps its wings. From being a cook in the kitchen, a maid in the living room, a whore in the bedroom, a teacher at the children’s study table to a successful worker in office, she has to do it all. All this, with a cheery smile on her face, to make her loved ones feel that she is happy doing what she is doing. Amazing how much a woman can tolerate! Without a doubt, she is the ubiquitous super woman of the super advanced era of humanoids. But what gets her going? Where does she find the motivation to always outperform herself? For freedom, she goes to the malls. She goes shopping. She is virtually powerless at home, giving in to the demands and wishes of in-laws, husband and children. Malls give her the power of choice, the power of rejection, the power of decision. Here, she can choose to accept or reject whatever is offered. She feels this power at the local market too, but the power at malls is a leisurely one. Here, she feels one-in-the-crowd - a sense of belongingness with the fellow superwomen. She goes for mindless movies, absorbing mindless junk, eating crappy junk. It helps her leave behind the constant nagging of an extremely demanding life. For these couple of hours, she can get lost. And if she travels by local trains every day, it can, in fact, be a blessing. Here she can vent out all the built up frustration. Here is where she can fight and unburden herself. Here is her much wanted form of catharsis. This is why she keeps going back. To the mind-numbing tele-series. To the ever-crowded malls. In the inhumanly crowded trains. They are therapeutic for her. They give her courage, freedom and release. They give the powerless superwoman, the much needed power. So that everyday when she gets up, she can think, ‘Yes, I can do it!’
