Top 10 Colleges for Learning Communication in India
Canadian writer Marshall McLuhan has hit the nail on the head when he says “today we are beginning to notice that the new media are new languages with new and unique powers of expression”. Mass Communication has today emerged as a preferred career choice and thus many institutes have come up with professional courses in Media Studies. Here’s a list of the top media colleges in the country. Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai: This institute has built a reputation on the basis of its distinctive diploma and certificate courses which provide specialization in different fields of communication like radio jockeying. The faculty is highly qualified. It provides large-scale exposure to the real industry thereby making it a preferred choice of communication students. Asian College of Journalism, Chennai: It is among the leading journalism schools in India which offers post graduate courses in journalism. Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi: Established in 1965, IIMC is the premier institute for learning communication in the country. Funded and promoted by the Government of India, it is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. What sets it apart is its infrastructure and faculty. It attracts maximum applications than any other media school with only 1 in every 100 applicants standing a chance for admission. Courses offered include advertising and PR, radio journalism and TV journalism. The school also conducts various seminars and workshops that give students practical experience. Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre (AJKMCRC), Jamia Millia, New Delhi: It is an institute of great renown and being a part of the prestigious Jamia Millia Islamia enhances its credibility. Set up in 1982, it aims at creating learned and creative media professionals. Courses offered include PhD, Masters in Mass Communication and Convergent Journalism, and Post Graduate Diplomas in Photography as well as Graphics and Animation. Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune: An institute of great repute, SIMC nurtures the highest standard of training and inquiry into the multifaceted needs of the present day media and communications industry. It is one of the most sought after communications school in India. Their programs provide a healthy mix of theory and practice thereby making the students industry ready. It offers MBA in Public Relations, Advertising and Media Management, and Masters of Mass Communication in Journalism and Audio-Visual. Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA): One among the best and most prestigious academic institutions for learning professional communications management in India, MICA was set up in 1991. Living up to its vision of being a distinguished communications management school to create industry-ready media professionals, it offers Post Graduate programs, executive Post Graduate programs, and Post Graduate certificate programs in media studies. Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM), Bangalore: IIJNM is a post graduate school of journalism having affiliations with leading media houses and media corporations and enjoys a reputation of providing 100% placements. The focus is on giving practical exposure. The students get to work for in-house newspapers, magazines, websites, radio stations and TV channels thereby gaining hands-on experience. It also boasts of eminent figures from the field of journalism as visiting faculties. Department of Communication and Journalism, Pune University, Pune: Pune University’s department of communication and journalism has been named among the top ten colleges by the Outlook magazine this year. The department became a full-fledged department of the university in 1976. Its earliest course in journalism was a 2 year part time diploma course which was made a full time degree course in 1973. Today it offers masters in Journalism and Mass Communication, Diploma in Mass Media and a PhD program for research in Journalism and Mass Communication. Manorama School of Communication (MASCOM), Kottayam: Less than a decade old, MASCOM has established a reputation as a premier centre of journalism training. Working on a tagline of “Training tomorrow’s Journalists”, the institute provides students a comprehensive education in journalism and important issues of the day. Laying stress on practical training, students are provided with advanced skills in reporting and writing for the print medium and are also exposed to state-of–the-art printing technology and communication systems. Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Delhi: Established in 1938, it is one of the oldest educational trusts in India. The trust’s Sardar Patel College of Communication and Management was setup in 1967. The college provides professional studies at the post-graduate level, particularly for working professionals, on part time basis. It provides one year diploma courses in journalism, public relations, marketing and advertising, mass communication and event management among others.
