Top 5 Alternative Rock Bands
Your Guide to the Top Alternative Rock Bands Music is something we are all familiar with, something we all listen to all the time. A certain genre of music which people usually listen to is rock, but for those of you who are light-hearted and can’t take the heavy metal riffs and the heavy drum beats, you can stick to something we know as alternative rock. This genre emerged in the 1980’s and by the 1990’s it had completely taken off. When we talk about mainstream alternative rock, there were very few bands which had gained immense commercial success in the 80’s; some of the few included “REM” and also “The Cure”. But during the 90’s, different sub branches of this genre of music started emerging, like industrial rock which was popularized by bands like “Nine Inch Nails”, or the grunge which we all know as “Nirvana”. Here, we tell you about bands which you need to listen to and the best bands which ever existed in the history of alternative rock. Radiohead We start off the list with number 5, where we have Radiohead, a British band which started gaining mass popularity in the 1990’s. This band has been categorized as one of the hardest working rock bands which exist in the business. With the release of their debut album called “Pablo Honey” in 1993, they managed to start gaining popularity in the music world internationally. Since then, they have put out four albums which have helped them achieve the title of one of the best alternative rock bands in the world. Red Hot Chili Peppers Coming in fourth on our list is a band that everybody has heard of – “Red Hot Chili Peppers”. This seven-time Grammy award-winning band started in 1983 and has been going strong ever since. Their entrance into mainstream music started with their album “Mother’s Milk” which came out in 1989. But in 1991, after they released “Blood Sugar Magik”, they came to be known as the RHCP we know of today. Since then, they have come out with songs like “Californication”, “By the Way” and “Road Trippin”. The immense success of this band is what has landed it in the number four spot in our list. Coldplay For the number 3 spot in our list, we have another British band formed in the late 90’s—a band that many of us have heard of, called “Coldplay”. Apart from the band’s distinctive style, what has landed Coldplay on our list is their use of a wide variety of instruments. This can be found in their recent album “Viva la Vida”. Apart from the technical aspect, if you listen to songs like “Yellow”, “Fix You” and the “The Scientist”, you will find yourself falling in love with the band as well as the dreamy voice of their lead singer, Chris Martin. So, for producing some of the best songs the world has heard, this quartet gets the recognition of the third best alternative band. Nirvana The first runner up on our list is the all-American rock band which we all know better thanks to their guitarist Kurt Cobain. This is the band which showed people all over the world what the grunge side of alternative rock was like. They managed to shoot up to stardom with their second album called “Nevermind” which came out in 1991. All of the public response which they received was mainly because of one very famous song - “Smells like Teen Spirit”. In 1993, the band released their third album called “In Utero” which won the hearts of fans all over the world. However, this was the end of an era for the band due to the passing away of their front man Cobain in 1994. Although the success of this band was very short-lived, they managed to sell around 50 million albums all over the world, which provides them the title one of the greatest bands till date. U2 Finally, we end our list with one of the greatest bands, which has managed to last with the change in time. This Irish band emerged in the 1980’s with their first album “Boy”. Since then, they have released 11 albums. What sets this band apart from the rest is the fact that though times have changed and the type of music people listen to has changed, they manage to change with the times while sticking to their distinctive style. With the release of their recent album in 2009, “No line on the horizon”, the band proved that they are here to stay and though they may be considered an old band, they can produce some of the most magical and original tracks ever.
