Travel and Education in India
The travel industry in India is a vast one, and is finally recuperating after taking a bad beating, post the recession. Travel agents and companies are finally making their way out of bad losses and basically, a bad year in travel, all caused by the recession. But, as they say, behind every cloud there’s a silver lining; the travel industry is now witnessing its silver lining after a series of losses. Over the years, the travel industry has evolved to become one of the best paying sectors. Education has opened another big door for the travel industry. Schools have been organizing journeys for students for years on end, and in recent years, this well-paying traveling segment has attracted many a travel agent and company to deliver tailor-made interesting journeys for students. The education industry is a big one, and with each passing year, it is just getting bigger and bigger. This can only spell good news for tour and travel companies. Nowadays, schools and parents are keen on exposing their students to domestic and overseas travel in a big way, which is why there has beenn a sudden spurt in student travel over the past few years. Domestic destinations like hill stations and beach destinations have always been a favorite, but now with the advent of double income parents, purse strings have loosened, and parents are not adverse to the idea of sending their children to foreign destinations on school trips. Also, with both parents working, family vacations become rare, and, to compensate, parents send their children on school trips. In recent times, destinations like Thailand, Mauritius, Canada, USA, Kenya, Europe, Hong Kong and China have become very popular for student trips. Add to this, the educational component that each of these locations have to offer. Today’s Indian traveler is a more intelligent traveler, and selling him/her any and everything is not quite so easy. Similarly, when approaching a school to sell a journey, any old location doesn’t work. If people are willing to pay a high amount, they also expect value for money, same being the case with student travel. Parents are growing increasingly concerned that their child gets the right kind of exposure, and although travel guarantees a healthy exposure, the kind of travel must be well defined. Just visiting a location and going on a guided tour no longer excites students. The whole experience must be interactive, giving the student opportunities to explore and discover unusual aspects of that location. This can be ensured through a vast pool of activities that are designed to suit different locations, and increase the student’s general awareness and interest in a location. Thus, the travel industry is marked for great changes in the sphere of student travel, changes that will not only bring in tremendous amounts of business, but changes that will ensure that travel becomes a great tool for imparting education and the all essential life skills.
