India has always been an exciting travel destination for all kinds of travelers from around the world. Post liberalization, it has changed from being just a magical and exotic land to a business destination offering many opportunities. Micro, small, and medium enterprises of various industry verticals across the country are today the engine of growth of our economy. Over the years, these enterprises have come together to form clusters at various locations, offering collective advantages of variety and competitive prices to buyers. Today, business has moved beyond the boundaries of metro cities and many small towns in India have become business hubs. If you’re an entrepreneur or even just a business enthusiast, chances are you will enjoy visiting these places!
Guntur, Andhra Pradesh: Located 266 km south east of the state capital of Hyderabad, Guntur is the fourth largest city in Andhra Pradesh. It is not just home to historical monuments but is also a major commercial centre. The city hosts Asia’s largest market for red chillies and is well known for exporting cotton, tobacco and chilli. Availability of a skilled and educated workforce has encouraged the development of industry, key sectors being: biotechnology, textile mills, cement, and iron ore processing. Information Technology is also coming up in a big way fuelling the growth of many MSMEs in the region. The city’s coastline also plays a significant role in offering opportunities for trade, transport and tourism.
Muzzafarpur, Bihar: Famously known as ‘the land of lychee’ the district was created in 1875 and a town by the same name is its capital. The place is one of the many gateways to Nepal and is well known for trade of food grains and clothes with the neighboring country. Muzzafarpur is famous for exporting lychee and is the commercial hub of north Bihar. You will also find the wholesale market for Mumbai, Surat and Ahmedabad here. Areas around Muzzafarpur are predominantly agricultural and hence the scope of food processing industry is great here. If you’re not a teetotaler, you might also want to sample Muzzafarpur’s famous ‘toddy’ or the poor man’s beer once your business for the day is over!
Jalandhar, Punjab: In Hindu mythology, Jalandhar was the eponymous kingdom of a devil in ‘satyuga’. One of the oldest surviving cities of Punjab, today Jalandhar is the world’s biggest manufacturer of leather tool pouches and aprons and is also the country’s biggest supplier of sports goods. The city is a leading international sports market with presence of brands like JJ Jonex, BAS Vampire, Syndicate Sports etc. Jalandhar is also known for industrial tools like thrust bearings and ball bearings and has increasingly become a hub of industry of all scales.
Bhavnagar, Gujarat: A coastal city with a rich heritage, located in the western state of Gujarat, Bhavnagar was the first princely state to merge with the democratic Union of India in 1948. Bhavnagar city is not just the fifth largest in the state but is also the cultural capital of Saurashtra region. Industrial development took place in the city thanks to the region being famous for diamond cutting and polishing. Today it also has enterprises manufacturing salt and marine chemicals, plastics and even has ship building and breaking industries. After Surat, Bhavnagar is known for its diamond cutting and polishing industry employing more than 300,000 people. It is also the country’s largest producer of salt. Over a thousand enterprises in the city contribute to its economy and the city is also a prominent trading post for cotton products.
Yamunanagar, Haryana: This town is well known for its cluster of plywood units due to easy accessibility of poplar logs. Yamunanagar is a unique blend of the old and the new – relaxed, smiling and homely people with an old world charm set in a town that has all modern amenities like shopping malls and quality healthcare and education solutions. With expanding industries, Yamunanagar went on extending geographically and has today resulted in a diverse culture. Today it is the second highest revenue generator of Haryana and is a hub for sugar and paper manufacturers. It is not only home to some big manufacturers but is also a great destination for upcoming micro, small and medium enterprises.
Almost every state and union territory in India is today becoming a business hub of sorts and the country is no longer a destination just for leisure travelers. Moreover, foreign business travelers are no longer limited to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. In fact, hidden in the many crevices of this vast land are enterprises that are slowly rising to fame by making international deals while also developing public infrastructure and creating millions of jobs. The next time you’re in India on business, take a look at one of the less known business hubs and enjoy the hospitality and geographical beauty while adding those profits to the balance sheet!
