Kerala, God’s own country, situated in the southern part of India, is one of those rare gems seen on the face of Mother Earth. With the Western Ghats cutting across the state, it is indeed an enchanting treat for nature lovers. Amazing landscapes draped with lush greenery, scenic waterfalls, exotic beaches, mesmerizing backwaters, and scintillating hill stations etc are all the hallmarks of Kerala. It is one of the cleanest places in the Indian subcontinent and also among the healthiest. Traveling around Kerala can be an experience to be cherished forever.

Kerala also has the distinction of being India’s most literate state coupled with very low infant mortality rate and highest life expectancy rate. Some of the world’s best known natural forms of treatment are prevalent in this part of the world. One can experience complete peace and tranquility of the mind in this land of the coconuts.

Some of the must-visit places in Kerala include the backwaters of Allapuzha, the Cochin harbor, the wildlife sanctuaries and beaches in Kozhikode, the picturesque hill stations in and around Wayanad, the Padmanabha Swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, the shrines and cultural centers in Pathanamthitta and the various religious learning centers in Malappuram among others. These are just some of the many fascinating attractions which Kerala has to offer and travelers can experience nature’s beauty in the form of beaches, hill stations and a never-seen-before splash of greenery wherever they go.

Allapuzha, known for its phenomenal beauty, has been accredited as the “Venice of the East” by travelers the world over. Boats races, which are immensely popular in Kerala, take place here and attracts a large number of people who throng in thousands to watch it. Backwaters have been the shining armor for Allapuzha and have been one of the major attractions for tourists from all over the world. Boathouses give tourists an opportunity to be with Mother Nature without missing the basic comforts of a home.

Cochin, the commercial capital of Kerala, has one of the best known natural harbors in the world, which once flourished in trade and commerce and has been aptly called as the “Queen of the Arabian Sea”.

Wayanad is an awesome treat for all nature lovers and it offers some stunning visuals with its misty hill stations and charming forests. Trekking is a very popular activity in these regions.

Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala and also among the prettiest in this part of the world. Many historic monuments and temples are found here, the Padmanabha Swamy temple devoted to Lord Vishnu and the Attukal Bhagavathy temple being among the more popular ones among the tourists. Delightful beaches and enchanting greenery makes Thiruvananthapuram one of the hot spots of Kerala. It also boasts of one of the first zoological parks to be built in India.

Pathanamthitta, characterized by its hilly terrain, is considered as the centre of pilgrimage in Kerala. A major portion of this place is covered by forests and is among the most sought after heritage villages in Kerala. Malappuram is epitomized by its various centres for Hindu Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy and is marked by the presence of a significant number of temples and mosques. It has contributed tremendously to the cultural heritage of Kerala and the fervor with which festivals are celebrated here is a spectacle to behold.

Notwithstanding these popular spots for tourism, Kerala offers other extravaganzas for people of all ages. The Guruvayoor temple (Lord Krishna), the Sabarimala temple (Lord Ayyappa) and numerous other temples see scores of people, typically in lakhs, flocking to get a glimpse of their favorite gods; and the numbers are increasing every year. The jungles of Kerala are home to a variety of rare herbs with medicinal values, which has enabled the Ayurveda form of treatment to enlighten both our body and the soul. The Munnar hill station along with its tea estates is among the best in the country and arguably, the cleanest. Close to 12 wildlife sanctuaries and two national parks are sprawled across the state. Arts and culture is a passion in Kerala and Kathakali, a religious dance, performed by artists based on characters and themes from Hind mythology, is symbolic of Kerala. Kalarippayattu, believed to be the origin of all forms of martial arts, is practiced here. Kerala cuisines are popular throughout the country because of its spicy taste and rich nutrition content. Fish is a well known delicacy and is a craze among Keralites.

All in all, Kerala offers a complete entertainment package for everyone. The simplicity of this rich state will leave you spellbound and the warm friendliness with which the people of Kerala embrace the visitors to their state is something which is to be experienced first hand. A trip to Kerala is sure to be breathtaking and would sweep you off your feet.
