Ten Tips on Working from Home
A home-based business is an attractive career option as it strikes a perfect balance between work and personal life. Working from home gives you the benefit of flexible hours, convenient work schedules, financial and personal freedom. Here are some tips on working effectively from home: 1. Set a schedule and adhere to it. Plan your work schedule in advance – decide when to begin work, when to break for lunch or take time-outs and when to end the day. Plan on how many hours a day you wish to work and build it into your daily schedule. Structure your day based on work and home activities. Initially it may take some effort but once you get the hang of it, things will begin to fall in place. Sticking to a schedule makes you work smarter and enforces discipline. Keep family and friend informed about the home job option so that they do not disturb you during work hours. 2. Be flexible. Work during hours that suit you. If you are more alert in the morning then use that time to work productively. If you feel sluggish after lunch, take a power nap and feel refreshed. Build in regular breaks for phone calls, e-mails, meals, or for walking the dog. Being flexible makes you more dedicated and motivated. 3. Be organized. Stay organized and remain focused or else it will lead to stress and the work will seem overwhelming as you approach the deadlines If required, delegate home chores to the family while you concentrate on the work front. One great way to stay organized is by getting ready a checklist of all the tasks on hand. It is definitely rewarding to check items off the list at the end of the day. 4. Set up a separate work area in your home. Select a quiet place where you can work without distractions or interruptions. Keep it off-limits to others during work hours. 5. Equip your workspace with tools, materials, and other resources you need. Everything should be easily accessible and your work area neat and organized. Avoid clutter. Stock up stationery and consumables. Invest in a filing cabinet, an ergonomically designed chair and a sturdy business desk. Keep a water dispenser at hand. A computer, high-speed internet access, fax and a cell phone will help increase productivity. 6. Be Businesslike. Develop a website for your business, open a separate business account, hand out business cards and adopt a business-like attitude while interacting with people. Cultivate a professional image and dress for work. 7. Network. Social networking helps your business grow. Promote yourself. Let people be aware of who you are and what you do. Develop contacts and establish relationships. Be sure to follow up and keep in touch with your contacts. Using the phone or email is rather helpful in this regard. 8. Research. Learn everything about working from home. Keep abreast of trends and developments in your line of business. Acquire new skills, read literature pertaining to your business and join online groups that center around your area of interest. Attend conferences and expos. 9. Plan. Having a clear-cut plan helps you achieve your goals faster. Know exactly what you are aiming for and determine the tasks necessary to achieve it. You are the sole decision-maker as there is nobody to guide/advise you. Weigh every decision before you enforce it. 10. Stay motivated and disciplined. Pump yourself up; as you have to compete against yourself as opposed to an office, others are around to motivate you. You are your own boss and will have to monitor your progress. Take failure in your stride; learn from every mistake and power through every obstacle. Do not give up. With these ten tips in your arsenal, you are now all set to become a successful home based worker.
