Indian Murals and Paintings: an e-book
The book is a modest attempt to provide a keen and interesting insight into the world of Indian murals. Dating back centuries, this highly creative and exuberant art form is a delight for the inclined aesthete. The temples of India are living monuments widely showcasing the resplendence of this primitive form of painting. The book, divided into two sections, takes the reader on a spiritual and imaginative journey through the caves and temples of India wherein lies the essential rudiments of this art form. The first section of the book offers a brief perspective on the tradition of paintings in India with special emphasis on wall paintings and murals, characteristic features of mural paintings and Indian classical texts, how they are made, their origin and the places where they are found. It primarily focuses on the origin and history of wall paintings in the Deccan and south India. The second section deals with the various kinds of mural paintings found in North, East and Central India. This includes descriptions of Kerala murals and their origin, Rajasthani murals, the Mughal miniatures and the Buddhist murals in India and the murals of Punjab. Today, there are very few painters and craftsmen who still practice this ancient art. This primitive art form, which once adorned the walls and ceilings of temples and palaces of India, has acquired a new commercial relevance too. These vibrant paintings are fast becoming an attraction for tourists. The book hopes to give new dimension to this ancient art by creating a general awareness among the readers as well as giving a call to preserve this vibrant art form, which is today at the mercy of a few mural painters in India. |
