‘Mainak and I – One night in the ocean’ is a collection of poems by Sabarna Roy, an author and poet based in Kolkata. This new ePublication of Chillibreeze consists of 21 sparkling pieces, meticulously following the world of the author's dreams, images and metaphors, reflections and stories.

The poems are written in a reflective and narrative matrix in a poetic idiom. Since these 21 pieces are inseparable from each other in a hidden way,  dealing with the sub-phenomenal experience of lyric of love and loss (although written in free verse), they should be treated as a part of a poem cycle and not an anthology. They are sequenced in a manner of their connectivity to each other like flowers in a garland or events in a long story and not by chronology of their writing.

These poems were written between July and November 2008, after the author completed a collection of 14 short stories, 10 of which feature in his e-book 9 Lives and a Death. Ironically, the story cycle captures another sub-phenomenal experience of melancholy of love and loss.

Chillibreeze invites manuscripts from writers, both first time and established authors, for publication. Click here to find out how you can self publish too.

Review of the eBook

Love, Loss and Agony of the Age are eternal sources of inspiration of creation particularly of poetry. The basic human feelings remain the same but the reactions and expressions change with time. In our widely diverse world of today people are multi-facetted and multi-dexterous. This enriches today’s literature with wide range of imagery, vocabulary and presentation.

Sabarna Roy, in his first book of poems brings out the feelings of Love, Lost Love and Agony in his age in a typical urban (Calcuttan) upper middle class society. The first poem ‘Love’ and the last one ‘Mainak and I – One Night in the Ocean’ together represent the chain of thoughts that bind the bouquet. In the first he brings out the intense desire for belonging and possessing. In the last, the hollowness of our mind full of conceit which falls for convenience.

Sabarna Roy’s multiple ability is noticeable in his imagery and forms of the poems. We hope he will continue to write poetry while pursuing his other ambitions.

Excerpts from Mainak and I- One Night in the Ocean

Face and the Bookcase

I saw my face in a bookcase the skin parched from burning and even melting at places
Queries leapt inside my mind like flowers of spring
Where are the books in the bookcase?
What is the point at which human skin melts?
Then I saw ants, red and green, eating into my face in the bookcase and thick chunks of wood

Clouds of Life

While on the way to Debolina’s house, I realized something special: a blanket of clouds covered our sorrows and invisibility so well that no longer we were sad to make a new beginning.

Café Kali

This is a place I visited on a rainy damp night
With a red kite flying in my head and willing to fight
A slogan on the kite in black said: Life is a perpetual loss

Cocoa Brain

I found a woman behind the glass rolling, sitting on a red leather bound cushioned seat full of poise, grace and calm in black as if she was wearing the night on her skin
She was a woman whom once upon a time I knew very well, namely, Kokila, but I loved calling her Cocoa Brain, a brat to the core, I thought at that time she was a petite selfish woman, a girl really then, a serpent who was good to spend some time with but not forever
Well I thought she was a pigeon brain, not in understanding of finer nuances of life and death
Last year I met her under dramatic circumstances in a traffic jam at Ballygunj –square

Killer and a Cop story

A prisoner told me once –
In a dark cell you lose count of time, days and nights
You are constantly falling and rising
You feel the ambiguous world of zero gravity

The first lines he screeched at me were –
I am the suffering of god
I am the fly that bites and thrives on others blood
Even the blood that pumps the chest of god
