One rite of passage all new residents of Mumbai must perform is registration with the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office). If your visa is for more than 180 days, you must register within 14 days of your arrival in Mumbai. You cannot purchase a cell phone or open a bank account without your FRRO booklet.

Some expats’ relocation companies pay for a consultant to help you with the visa and FRRO process. The consultant is helpful in ensuring that you have all the required documents ready before you devote a day of your time to the FRRO. If you undertake this on your own, the Mini Namaskar Mumbai guide provides a checklist of documents to bring as well as a diagram of the FRRO office that labels the eight stations you will need to visit to get your FRRO booklet. No, the stations are not in any kind of order, and there are no signs!
