Q & A's from readers |
| |
Q: We know that Bangalore is growing and changing quickly! We would prefer to live somewhere culturally interesting that still has the feel of "old Bangalore." We do not need to be near new modern "improvements," such as pubs, fancy hotels, ritzy shops, etc. We would like to be close to parks or open spaces where we could walk and play with the kids?
A: This is the single biggest toughie for families. Most areas have small bits of green with a sketchy playground somewhere nearby, but you have to check for rusty equipment and stray dogs. We make loads of day trips on week ends, but do low scale stuff on weekdays, usually cricket with the kids next door or simple street soccer. There are some great places within an hour or two though, so you can make up for quantity with quality. We got a book that gave us a list of places within a few hours drive and are working our way slowly through it. The children’s library in Koramangala has classes and activities for very young kids, but you may find that your pre-school offers similar stuff. We have been making the most of the concert and theatre prices and taking our kids to plays and concerts to make up for outdoor time.
Q: I'm so thrilled to discover your website! My husband's firm is transferring us to Bangalore for 2-3 years to set up a back office, and I'm nervous about what I should take with me what not to, etc..., mainly what do I do with all my furniture? Did you ship yours to India? Also, what about cookware, pots and pans, dishes, should I take my own? What do you recommend storing and what do you recommend just throwing away? Also, how do you go about finding housemaids and drivers? Is there an agency that can help?

Bangalore Buzz:
It’s been a year since we moved to India. Even with a family as determinedly enthusiastic as us, the novelty was wearing off. The notorious Bangalore traffic, the lack of outdoor options for the kids, the small daily frustrations were getting to us. To complicate emotions we made our first trip back to California after moving here, and it was hard to meet friends, and see old haunts and realize how much we missed them.

Newborn Screening Test |
| |
Both my children were born in California. Although my pediatrician tried to tell me the various tests and screenings that were done routinely for newborns, it mostly went over my head. All I knew was that they drew some blood at birth, and some more a day later from the heel, and if we didn’t hear back it was good news. Recently, however, while talking with a few of my friends here in India, I realized that there was a lot we took for granted in the US. Maybe because both my pregnancies were high risk my kids went through more than the basic testing, but it seemed odd to me that what seemed like simple, non-invasive testing was only done here after a problem manifested itself.
