Jackie is an Irish, she lived in the Netherlands for ten years and moved back home to Ireland two years ago just after her son was born. Now she is in the process of relocating to Bangalore, India for her husbands job. She has been in this fabulous country now for just over two weeks. Life is changing very rapidly for her at the moment one of the changes being to transition from a part-time worker/part-time Mom to full-time Mom. Ironic homebird, missing Ireland and family and friends.

KC never fails to bring us a fresh look at life in Bangalore, even after 2 years! This issue KC takes you on a retail and real estate journey. I turned “envious expat” after reading the food retail options available in Bangalore. Working from Shillong, North East India, I get excited about taking my daughter to a Café Coffee Day, we’ll have to catch up on the goodies during our next trip to Bangalore.

Home Sweet Home: the eternal quest for expat housing in Bangalore |
| |
- by KC Comal
Summer is turn over time in the expat world. As the school year comes to an end, two year assignments and housing leases are also reaching expiration dates. Depending on the point of view, there are hoped for extensions or departures. It seems like the hot question on everyone’s mind is “Are you staying longer?” Everyone goes through their mental rolodex of friends and the biggest negative of expat life, the departure of friends, looms on the horizon. It’s hardest on the kids who make friends only to lose them as families relocate.
And as the expats move on, there is an odd merry go round of houses, domestic staff and drivers. Good ones are booked even before their families move out, and many expats want to make sure that loyal and sincere staff are well placed and have assured employment before they leave. Also up for grabs are the houses. With families leaving and prospective tenants coming in, houses are being evaluated and re-evaluated. Closer to school, closer to work, with a better pool, with more friends, now is the time to find, tweak or change.

Q & A's from readers |

Q: I came across your very informative and often humorous answers to expat questions in the Chillibreeze website. I will be relocating to Bangalore around end of June. I have 2 daughters both of whom are enrolled to join Indus Intl school next year . I thought I read your kids go to Indus too? I am trying to find best places to live in Bangalore, based on easy commute by school bus to Indus and for a easy commute to ITPL/Whitefield area. Would you mind sharing some apartment communities that are in the Indus school bus route and are within a easy commutable distance?

Getting Oriented: Landing Cards, Immigration, and Hotel Stay |
| |
Meet Jackie! Just relocated from Ireland to India with her husband and two year old son. You will enjoy reading about their move and settling in process.
We arrived to Bangalore at 4am and then went through immigration and handed over our landing cards (which will be given to you on the flight, just before arrival) and passports. We didn’t realize that we were supposed to get a section of the landing card back and were asked for that section after we collected our bags. We couldn’t find them and being very tired with a crying baby couldn’t even think straight, but a very nice man saw our predicament and let us through anyway, so remember to get back the section of the landing card from the immigration officer.

If you are wondering why the newsletters have been more and more sporadic: it’s simple. Life gets routine no matter where you are, and the novelties that impelled me to write are now mundane! School imposes a routine with mind numbing regularity, and before the summer comes with the inevitable turnover of expats, you have your group of buddies to hang out with.
