We arrived to Bangalore at 4am and then went through immigration and handed over our landing cards (which will be given to you on the flight, just before arrival) and passports. We didn’t realize that we were supposed to get a section of the landing card back and were asked for that section after we collected our bags. We couldn’t find them and being very tired with a crying baby couldn’t even think straight, but a very nice man saw our predicament and let us through anyway, so remember to get back the section of the landing card from the immigration officer.
We found that the wait for the bags took a bit of time, so be prepared to wait a little. There were lots of porters to help with our luggage at the carousel and they took our bags to the car for us, which was great as we had a lot of luggage and were worried about how we were going to manage it on arrival. We just gave the porters a tip of about 50 rupees each, so remember to get some rupees in advance of your travel for your arrival.
We had arranged in advance of arrival that, two cars would be there to take us to our hotel because, the hotel usually only send one small car and it will not be enough to take all the business class baggage allowance, buggy and car seat which was allowed on our flight. Arranging this in advance made the whole process much easier.
Once in the hotel, my advice is to enjoy the hotel (if you have one), but don’t be afraid to explore the area a little by going for a walk. The people are very friendly and helpful, but if you have a child then you could find it quite difficult (as we did) to use the footpaths with a buggy (depending on where in the city your hotel is). The footpath was more like obstacle course, and if you are tall, keep an eye out for the wiring system which seems to be strung along low lying tree branches which lean over the footpaths, just above head height for under six footers. We enjoyed our little walk however, as soon as we came to a junction on a major road we decided that we would head back as it seems we should apply for a licence to cross a road in Bangalore, and we decided we had not had enough training to try that yet.

—About our writer: Jackie is an Irish, she lived in the Netherlands for ten years and moved back home to Ireland two years ago just after her son was born. Now she is in the process of relocating to Bangalore, India for her husbands job. She have been in this fabulous country now for just over two weeks. So far, she have found the transition to Bangalore very interesting and enjoyable, but have only begun the journey of exploration in this amazing place. Life is changing very rapidly for her at the moment one of the changes being to transition from a part-time worker/part-time Mom to full-time Mom. Ironic homebird, missing Ireland and my family and friends, but the friendly people here make life much easier.
