Shillong-based Chillibreeze Solutions Pvt Ltd, a content and design service provider, used its in-house expertise to produce the comic - A Tale of Two Magic Potions - which aims to educate school children on the disease which affects every part of the country, specially the Northeast.
In what may be considered as the first-ever health comic book in the country, the book, a director of the company, Nishi Viswanathan, explains, is intended to educate while entertaining school-going children on the virulence of the disease.
The Chillibreeeze solutions kicked off its Malaria awareness campaign recently by distributing the comic book among Class V students of three schools in Shillong where the company is headquartered.
To gauge the effectiveness of the comic book, the Chillibreeze staff conducted pre-distribution and post-distribution quizz contests with attractive prizes to boot.
The chillibreeze staff first explained the format of the contest to the students before giving them 10 minutes to complete the multiple choice questions. Once the quiz contest was completed, the comic books were handed out to all students. The students were then told that Chillibreeze would be returning soon for the final quiz contest.
The students showed appreciable improvement in their knowledge about Malaria as indicated by their answers to the quizzes, Viswanathan claimed.
“Our purpose is to spread the awareness of the disease among students and do it in a way the children enjoy it,” she says.
Chillibreeze hopes to build strategic partnerships for this project and distribute translated versions of the comic book at schools across India.

Comic Book on Malaria Looks to Educate and Protect Children - ComicBook.com
Comic books have been used for many things over the years: propaganda, encouraging drug-free lifestyles, aiding hunger relief in other countries. Now, a new comic book is being distributed to children living in Shillong, India; the town, located in the northeastern part of the Asian country, is hoping to educate children on the disease Malaria.
Chillibreeze Solutions Pvt Ltd, a company based on design and content services, is behind the project, pulling from their own talent pool to produce A Tale of Two Magic Potions, a story that will be used in schools to educate students about Malaria, a disease that affects many around India. The company hopes to entertain and educate at the same time, and the comic has already been distributed to three schools in the Shillong area, where Chillibreeze is located.
In an effort to gauge just how effective the awareness campaign is, Chillibreeze gave before and after reading quizzes to the children to gauge just how much they have learned about the disease, offering prizes as an incentive for performance. Hopefully the effort will pay off in reaching out to the communities suffering from Malaria through their children.

25 June 2009: Shillong based content and design service provider Chillibreeze Solutions Pvt. Ltd released a comic book titled ‘A Tale of Two Magic Potions‘ to spread the awareness of malaria disease recently.
The comics are currently available in print and online versions both and are not for sale. The comic book is the first in a series of health comics intended to entertain, engage and educate school-going children.
Speaking to Animationxpress.com, Chillibreeze Director and Chief Content Officer Nishi Viswanathan said "The main aim was to spread the awareness about hazards of Malaria but not through traditional means. We wanted to do something that could have a lasting effect on young minds. Education in the form of brochures can sometimes be boring and ineffective, hence we selected comic book for its entertainment value. Education here occurs via osmosis and the content on malaria is there but not in your face. The goal is to get kids to enjoy it."
The comic book was created by a small team during their spare time in a about a couple of months. The script, storyboard and dialogues were done by Nishi Viswanathan while the illustrations were done by Nimai and Prem and edited by Suneethi Rao who headed the project management team. The comics are being distributed free of cost to school children and the online version is available at http://chillibreeze.com/ebooks/pdf/malaria.pdf.
The campaign was started by distributing the comic book to 5th grade students in 3 schools in Shillong, Meghalaya, where the company is headquartered. To gauge the effectiveness of the comic book, Chillibreeze staff conducted pre-distribution and post-distribution quizzes with attractive prizes.
Chillibreeze staff arrived at each of the school premises and spoke to the students about the upcoming malaria quiz contest. The format of the questionnaire was explained and students were given ten minutes to complete the multiple choice quiz. Once the quiz was done, the comic books were handed out to all the students.
A post-distribution contest was conducted a few days after the day the comics were distributed. The students showed a visible improvement in their knowledge about Malaria as indicated by their quiz answers.
According to Dr. Nishi Viswanathan, one of the directors at Chillibreeze, this comic is just the beginning of a long campaign. Chillibreeze would be taking the campaign further with more comics that add value to kids and families such as saving money for future, value of sincere work, protecting the environment and more.

Comic book spreads malaria message - Global Health TV
A message to be aware of the risks of malaria and take precautions against the disease is being spread in a novel way in India.
Chillibreeze.com has produced a new comic book with an anti-malaria theme.
The book, titled A Tale of Two Magic Potions, is aiming especially to target north-east India, where malaria is most widespread.
Students in schools are being handed the comic books free across the country in an effort to increase awareness of malaria's threat amongst young people.
Dr Nishi Viswanathan, director at Chillibreeze.com, told the Morung Express: "Though it is essentially a preventable disease, hundreds of people in India die of malaria.
"Distributing mosquito nets will help to a certain extent but the long term solution lies in empowering tomorrow's citizens with knowledge. Of course, ours is a small effort and it has just begun."
A Tale of Two Magic Potions is intended to be the first in a line of health-based comic books.
