Typical Meitei wedding in Manipur, India
Nimai and his new bride are part of the Meitei community. The Meiteis live in and around the Manipur valley. The Meiteis make up about 60% of the total population of Manipur. Within the Meitei community there are Brahmin Hindus, Panans (Muslims), Meitei Christians, and other schedule caste groups like the Chakpas and Thoubal Khunous. Today many Meiteis still follow the traditional Sanamahi religion.
One of the most popular cultural forms is the Ras Lila Dance. Tradition says that the modern game of Polo originated in Manipur. The Manipuri people call this horse hockey game Sagol Kangjei.
Meiteis are the dominant community, and thus their language, Meiteilon, has become the dominant language of the state of Manipur.
