1. Government afflicted by 'reformititis': Brinda
According to the latest stats, every half an hour, fifty children die and there is one woman dead every seven minutes. Said Brinda Karath, CPI(M) leader, “Ill health is wealth” is the thinking governing today’s policy makers and the government is unconcerned about the need to “tame the private sector.” The Union Government is giving chase to a new policy of privatization in the health sector and working towards taking India's public health sector apart. Karath has expressed serious concern over the abating share of expenditure of the public healthcare sector. According to her, the country is only about a degree above smaller countries like Myanmar, Sudan and Cambodia in terms of public health expenditure. Tuesday, May 08, 2007

1. See the Taj Mahal, have some surgery
The waiting lists in Canada are increasingy becoming a problem as the population soars and specialists, such as orthpoedic surgeons, flock to the US in numbers to make more money. At any given time, there is an average of 800,000 Canadians awaiting surgery. A couple of years ago, health-entrepreneur Yasmeen Sayeed of Vancouver, who along with her partners, came into the picture to put an end to this problem. They send Canadians to India for high-quality surgical procedures at a far more reasonable cost. She stated in an interview in Vancouver: “I worked for the Vancouver Health Authority until July, 2005, when I left to start Surgical Tourism Canada.” She also added: “I had a very good job but I saw the need, and there was a conflict for me to be sending patients to India for surgery and to work for the authority.” In the year 2006, shesent over 60 Canadians to India for various medical procedures, in which about half had to undergo major surgery.
Yasmeen Sayeed works with Apollo Hospitals Ltd. and has said, “The founder said he would love to open a hospital in Canada and could have one running within 18 months.” She continued to add: “I have approached several provincial health officials, but this is a political bombshell because of the medical establishment in Canada.” Since opening, she has placed more than 100 Canadians at Apollo's facilities for procedures such as cancer treatments, cardiac procedures, back surgery and orthopedic corrections.
